Summary of Anne, with an E
Aged Canadian siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert were set on adopting a little orphan boy in 1896 so that he might help out on the family farm, Green Gables. In an ideal world, 13-year-old Anne Shirley—who is both creative and bright—would be the child Matthew chooses at the train station.
Anne’s parents disappeared when she was just a few months old, leaving her an orphan. Rather than being placed in a home, she worked as a maid for a number of different families.
While Matthew has decided that he is in favour of Anne staying, Marilla has lost faith in her because of Anne’s anonymity as a youngster and her obvious lack of practical use. Marilla’s suspicion that Anne is a criminal seems to have been cemented by her inability to locate a brooch. The Cuthberts pack her up and send her back to the academy.
She goes back to her teaching post after visiting the orphanage, where she was bullied for years. In the meantime, Marilla realises that Anne’s former reputation as a thief was founded on prejudice and that she had simply misplaced the brooch.
Therefore, Matthew encounters Anne and convinces her to return to Green Gables for the ceremonial presentation phase of their family. Anne then observes bullying by Avonlea College students and social isolation by Diana’s parents and others due to their social status.
Using her endurance tools of intelligence, problem-solving skills, and creativity, Anne returns and once again seeks to gain respect among the others of Avonlea.
